  • Singles vs. Doubles:
    • In singles, it’s one player vs. one player.
    • In doubles, it’s two players vs. two players, usually with a teammate to help cover the court.

The Court:

  • The tennis court is divided by a net in the middle, and there are two sides: the left and the right.
  • When you serve, you have to aim diagonally into the other player’s service box (it’s like an invisible square on their side of the court).

Points:The main goal of tennis is to win points and eventually win games. Here's how points work:

  1. Starting the point:
    • The point starts with a serve, where the player hits the ball into the opponent's service box. If you miss, that’s a fault. You get two chances to serve the ball in. If you miss both, it’s called a double fault, and your opponent gets the point.
  2. Scoring a point:
    • When the ball is in play, both players try to hit it back and forth, making sure it lands inside the opponent’s side of the court. If the ball bounces twice or goes out of bounds, the other player wins the point.
  3. The tennis score:
The tennis score can be a little weird, but here’s how it goes:
    • 0 = Love (don’t ask why, tennis has its own language).
    • 15 = 1 point.
    • 30 = 2 points.
    • 40 = 3 points.
    • Game point = If you win the next point after 40, you win the game.
  4. If both players are tied at 40-40, it’s called deuce. From there, someone needs to win two points in a row to win the game (first point is called advantage).

Games, Sets, Matches:

  • Games: A game is won when you win four points, but you need to be at least two points ahead to win it.
  • Sets: A set is won when a player wins 6 games. But they need to be ahead by at least two games. So if it’s 5-5, you have to win 7-5. If it’s tied at 6-6, they play a tiebreaker (more on that in a sec).
  • Matches: A match is usually the best of three or five sets. Most Grand Slam men’s singles matches are the best of five sets, while women’s and men’s non-Grand Slam matches are best of three.

Tiebreaker:

  • If a set is tied at 6-6, you play a tiebreaker. This is where the scoring is different—players take turns serving, and it goes like this:
    • You need to win 7 points, but you have to be at least two points ahead. So if it’s 7-6, you win the set. If it’s 6-6 again, you keep going until someone wins by 2.

Winning the Match:

  • To win a match, you need to win more sets than your opponent. So if it’s the best of three sets, you need to win two sets. If it’s best of five sets, you need to win three.

Fun Facts About Tennis:

  • Surface Matters: Tennis is played on different surfaces: grass, clay, and hard courts. The surface affects how the ball bounces, and each one has its own vibe. Clay courts, for example, slow the ball down, while grass courts make it bounce faster.
  • The Grand Slams: These are the big tournaments that everyone talks about. They’re:
    1. Australian Open
    2. French Open (Roland Garros)
    3. Wimbledon (played on grass, super famous)
    4. US Open
